Overview
Due to an ever-changing landscape within public library design, innovative trends are beginning to transform their functionality.

Providing access to knowledge for all individuals, library designs are a cornerstone of any community. As communities have evolved, the building type of libraries has remained vital. Through our mission statement of making a difference in the communities we serve, we create library designs that efficiently meet a community's needs for the future. Due to an ever-changing landscape within how public libraries are designed, there are a wide variety of customizable options that can be included in a facility. Our team will help narrow in on the types of features that will benefit your community the most during our collaborative process.

Library Design

A Place to Learn

To be a location where community members can access as much knowledge as possible, we are committed to designing a space that balances unique library features. What has primarily been utilized as a space for collecting books in the past has grown into an area that provides flexible learning. While our library designs still feature space for collections, we also emphasize the future of public libraries. This includes space for more technology on-site (computers, maker spaces, etc.) as well as additional furniture options, study rooms, and inspiring interior design. By branching out of the typical library features, we can provide additional experiences for growth. We do this while also ensuring that operational efficiency is prioritized, including automated material handling systems and efficient staff resource locations.

A Place to Gather

As libraries have evolved, we've identified that these facilities aren't always meant to be silent. When done right, library designs can also provide the option for community gathering spaces. Dependent on the community needs for this building type, we can offer space options to include conference areas, meeting rooms and other collaborative environments. With our experience designing libraries, we have the resources necessary to assist in providing library layouts that emphasize connectedness. By implementing these features, organizations can have an additional area for community education events. Thus, facilitating another avenue for learning and gathering knowledge.

A Place to Receive Services

As a location that is a physical draw for citizens, many of our city and county clients see an opportunity to leverage those locations to provide other services to their citizens. We often see public libraries co-located with other government buildings or have the availability of other government services offered within the library. These co-location’s allow for unique collaboration that can assist in promoting community engagement. As a firm with a wide breadth of government facility architecture, we have the experience necessary to provide options for co-location with other government entities. With this collaborative facility, we hope to include facility features in the library design that promote collaboration, including meeting areas for individuals to receive city/county services and spatial options for additional entities to be included in the library. By doing this, our libraries can grow into a larger "service center" that expands the range of community offerings.

The features and layout of a modern library design are continually evolving to adapt to current societal needs. Staying in line with these trends, Wold is committed to creating spaces that match community members' preferences for accessing knowledge. We do this by creating facilities that feature innovative technology, flexible spaces for learning and meeting and areas where other community organizations can gather. Focusing on our designs' economic benefits, we take the time to understand how a facility can improve its overall operational efficiency, specifically relating to how design layouts can efficiently reduce the number of staff on-site. Our team understands that every community is different, and thus, we take the time to outline individual goals for a library design.
