Oaklyn Library, a 2003 Indiana AIA Honor Design Award winner, reflects Wold’s ability to create thoughtful, site-responsive civic spaces that balance design excellence with everyday functionality. As architect of record, Wold designed the 18,500-square-foot library to take full advantage of a site that drops 50 feet from the roadway, nestling the building into the hillside so all primary services can be accessed on one main level without stairs or elevators. Working with library consultant Engberg-Anderson of Milwaukee, the team created a welcoming, light-filled environment featuring tall windows, a central clerestory light well to maximize daylight, a cozy reading area with a digital fireplace, a community meeting room accessible after normal library hours, and a children’s reading area with computerized kinetic lighting and state-of-the-art technology. A defining feature of the project is its natural meadow garden roof, which protects the premium roofing membrane below from ultraviolet light and extreme weather while reinforcing the library’s connection to its landscape.
