The Hughes Center

The Hughes Center is a 96-bed residential treatment center in Danville, Virginia, serving children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and behavioral health needs.

When the original 1927 aging, multi-building campus no longer fully supported its evolving care model, Universal Health Services sought a new environment better suited to the specialized educational, therapeutic and daily living needs of its residents. Wold developed a prototypical residential treatment center plan, with The Hughes Center serving as its first built implementation. The 70,365-square-foot facility includes an on-site school, sensory-supportive features and multiple outdoor activity spaces designed to accommodate varying resident needs.

Designed specifically for children and adolescents receiving residential behavioral health care, the environment balances critical safety, durability and supervision requirements with a more approachable experience through color, simplicity and thoughtfully organized spaces.
