Northwest Medical Center Houghton

The Northwest Healthcare System recognized a need to expand on the services they offered, specifically in the eastern portion of Tucson, AZ. Northwest partnered with Wold to design a new acute care hospital to address those needs.

Northwest Medical Center – Houghton is a new 52-bed, acute-care hospital in the southeastern portion of Tucson, Arizona. The hospital is a separately licensed, but affiliated, hospital of the Northwest Healthcare System and serves as an anchor facility for a larger, master-planned, multi-use development. The new medical center brings both inpatient and outpatient healthcare services to a currently underserved area. These services include inpatient med/surg and ICU beds, an emergency department with acute care, fast-track, and behavioral health emergency services, obstetrical services, surgical services, cardiovascular services, laboratory testing, and radiology services.

The new acute-care center has caused a positive medical and economic impact. Due to the anticipated growth in the area it serves, the building is designed for additional expansion both internally and externally. Due to the anticipated growth in the area it serves, the building is designed for additional expansion to increase bed capacity to 126 beds and double the surgical and cardiovascular capacity in the future. The acute-care hospital was completed in late 2021.

“The team at Wold were great to work with on our Hospital. They were very responsive and readily available as any design issues, regulatory issues or general questions came up, like 'can we handle a Blackhawk on our helipad'. I truly appreciate their partnership on this project and would recommend them to anyone looking to expand or build.” -Brian Riese
