Alexandrian Public Library

The Alexandrian Public Library project thoughtfully balanced complex project goals while creating an entirely new visitor experience largely within the framework of the existing building. Strategic additions introduced a welcoming new entry sequence and small group meeting rooms, while the remainder of the project focused on reorganizing and revitalizing underutilized interior space. The children’s collection was enhanced with a new program room in place of the former story pit, and the teen collection was relocated adjacent to the adult collection while remaining distinct through tailored ceiling treatments and furnishings. The adult area was expanded to include three small group meeting rooms and a tech bar, and staff work areas were reconfigured and enlarged to better support operations. The most dramatic transformation occurred at the entry, where a once dark and cavernous corridor became a bright community gallery with a light-filled vestibule overlooking a new exterior water feature constructed from salvaged limestone taken from demolished library signage and neighboring buildings.
