North Branch Library was shaped through close collaboration with Library District officials and north side residents, who envisioned a branch that would serve as both a prominent civic presence and a warm, welcoming community destination. Set on a hillside adjacent to Central High School, the library combines timber and stone materials to create a distinctive lodge-like character. Inside, the design features an expansive young adult area positioned for easy supervision from the central circulation desk, with direct access to an outdoor reading garden and self-service café. Two towers anchor the building, with one offering a secluded adult reading area centered around a massive stone fireplace and the other housing the children’s reading room. While traditional in appearance, the library incorporates high-performance design strategies, including a raised-floor air plenum that enhances comfort, flexibility, and energy efficiency.
