Central Public Library

Central Public Library

Central Library brings a strong civic presence to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, contributing an impressive and carefully scaled addition to Evansville’s urban streetscape. Designed by Engberg-Anderson in association with Wold, the facility reflects the character of urban architecture at its best. The exterior pays homage to Evansville’s architectural heritage through the use of Indiana limestone, brick, and zinc-coated metal panels. Twin entry pavilions accommodate arrivals by car and on foot, leading visitors into a dramatic two-story atrium lobby. The administrative wing includes generous public meeting spaces, while an inviting bistro café opens to a large outdoor courtyard. The children’s imagination area extends into an adjoining children’s garden, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor environments. Throughout the library, seating within the stacks and circulation areas includes intimate window reading nooks, and parking for 200 vehicles is efficiently accommodated with 140 underground spaces.
