From his early days at Wold Architects & Engineers as an intern to his current role as an Education Practice Leader, Tyler Ertl’s career has been guided by listening closely and responding to challenges with intention. That approach has helped him translate clients’ vision into environments that support how people learn and connect.
Tyler’s extensive experience in K-12 design has been successful because he makes building client trust a top priority and fosters a sense of shared ownership among his team and partners.
“Each role and responsibility has reinforced for me that there’s never a one-size-fits-all solution in architecture,” Tyler said. “Every project requires a thoughtful response to its purpose, users and context.”

Tyler’s connection to education started long before his career in architecture. Growing up in a family of teachers and educators, he had firsthand exposure to both the opportunities and challenges within learning environments.
“That perspective made me curious about how spaces could better support teaching and learning,” he said. “When I discovered architecture through a high school drafting class, it clicked for me as a way to combine creativity with that desire to make a meaningful impact.”
That early influence led him to K-12 design and Wold. Tyler has continued to build on that foundation through close collaboration with clients and a commitment to understanding what matters most to each district and community.
Tyler points to North Star Elementary School for White Bear Lake Area Schools as an important experience of his career.
The project, a new K-5 facility, reflected a district-wide commitment to rethinking how learning environments support both students and educators. As lead designer, Tyler worked closely with district staff and administrators to translate their vision into a built environment of flexible spaces that serve a variety of teaching and learning styles.
“Seeing students, families and staff experience the building for the first time was a defining moment in my career,” he said. “I learned a lot by collaborating with such dedicated educators to create a space that supports innovative learning and continues to evolve each day.”
A consistent theme in Tyler’s work is a structured, intentional approach to communication. From the earliest stages of a project, he prioritizes understanding each client’s communication preferences and expectations. Regular updates and check-ins are scheduled to keep everyone informed and maintain trust throughout the process. This helps navigate complexity and avoid roadblocks, and ensures that clients and project teams feel heard and confident throughout the process. The resulting work is not just a solution, but a shared vision that reflects the client’s goals and values.
Tyler emphasizes that strong design, especially in learning environments, also comes from aligned teams willing to build on each other’s ideas. Having grown from intern to practice leader, he encourages other young professionals to embrace the same mindset.
“You don’t have to do it all alone,” he said. “Early on, it can feel like you need to have all the answers, but the best ideas come from collaboration – working with your team, listening to clients and really understanding the people you’re designing for. That’s what makes the work meaningful.”
Working with others is what makes architecture rewarding for Tyler. It’s not just about the completion of a building; it’s about the relationships formed along the way.
“I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with incredibly talented and supportive colleagues, consultants and clients,” he said. “In the process, I’ve built valuable relationships and lasting friendships that extend beyond the work itself.”
Outside of work, Tyler recharges by spending time with his family and friends. They are often hiking or swimming or relaxing at home with his dogs.
Tyler’s curiosity and creativity extend beyond architecture. He enjoys reading, following sports and tackling home improvement projects.
