Created in 1988 by remodeling an old elementary school, the Minnesota Veterans Home – Silver Bay had an institutional design that lacked activity and gathering spaces for residents in the units. In looking to support a “Person First” care model, the design of the additions and renovations creates a comfortable cabin environment that feels like a familiar home away from home. Outdoor themes including hunting and fishing fondly remind veterans of leisure days near the lake. Finishes and materials support the design by reflecting colors of nature and a residential palette while providing the durability, code requirements, and ease of maintenance that a skilled care setting requires. By creating neighborhoods and households for the residents, the layout provides the proper private areas for spending time with family members and gathering areas for activities with other residents, alleviating the feel of an institution.
