After two unsuccessful attempts at securing a BEST grant, Otis School District collaborated with a new planning team to create a revised master plan that provided parameters more aligned with the BEST grant program. The plan, responsibly meeting current needs while anticipating the future with flexibility, garnered strong community support and secured a BEST grant for the district. The most viable option preserved the existing Pre-Kindergarten facility and incorporated a new, adjacent school on the existing site.
The design embraces the nature of the community—conservative and durable, featuring earthy tones and subdued materials. Flexibility plays an integral role, with corridors doubling as learning areas and the community-accessible cafeteria serving as a flexible gymnasium and auditorium. The district was so interested in sharing the space with the community that even the seats in the gymnasium had backs to accommodate different ages.
