The George W. Gibbs Elementary School is centrally located and serves as a community center for students and families in a new neighborhood. Students use city ball fields north of the school, while the school itself is open after-hours for community and public use. The facility features flexible classroom clusters, a centralized media center, shared computer labs, an enclosed cafeteria and commons, and an efficient administration adjacent to the main entry.
Sustainability features stand at the core of the design, pursuant of LEED Silver certification. Focused on operational efficiencies and decreasing utility resources, the design incorporates new, innovative mechanical systems and enhanced daylighting. A geothermal ground source heat pump system, ice storage energy transfer, displacement ventilation, and CO2 monitoring reinforce sustainable choices for the district.
