The City of Cottage Grove conducted a master plan for a municipal campus to include not only the public safety and city hall, but also a future community center, fire station, and library on the site adjacent to the Washington County South Service Center.
The design of the public safety and city hall confirmed operations and considered future growth projections for civic departments. The building is a transparent, adaptable, and comfortable place for visitors and staff alike. A breakroom, fitness room, and other staff spaces are shared between public safety and city hall staffers. The lobby doubles as overflow space for the Council Chambers, and the chambers, training and EOC, community room, and kitchen create a secure meeting room. This suite is available for use afterhours. The new facility uses the spacious and pastoral site to its advantage; patios overlook Ravine Park and the natural topography allows for a tuck-under garage.
The Cottage Grove Fire Station consolidates two old fire stations into one central station. After analyzing space use and conditions, the new station’s design is user-friendly, welcoming to the community, and reflective of the history of the fire department. The station encourages flexibility of the building as a balanced work environment and as a training facility that plans for the future growth of the city and fire operations.
