St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church

Sandwich, Illinois

A year after a near tragic fire – the parish decided to consolidate its properties by moving the sesquicentenaries to its Parish Center site on West Arnold Road.

In addition to the new basement, a gathering space was created to re-place the church’s original double door airlock entrance.  Included in the new space were accessible restrooms, a reconciliation room, stairs to the church’s balcony, and a connecting link to the parish hall.  Provisions were made in the basement and roof structure to accommodate a future elevator.  A steeple was also added to the church, bringing it closer to its original 19th century form.

18 months later, fire again visited St. Paul.  The decision was made to rebuild the church as close to original configuration as practical, with provisions made for current building and fire code requirements.
