Orono Middle School

Orono Public Schools

Wold worked extensively with Orono Public Schools to develop and design a new middle school to house grades 6 through 8 - the first of its kind in a school district having a deep tradition in middle school philosophy. Rather than a departmental organization that requires students moving throughout the building to receive instruction in each subject, the house concept organizes the majority of instructional and support spaces into a series of identical houses where information moves to the student. The house's flexible collection of classrooms and support spaces are able to accommodate any type of subject matter and fosters practices like interdiciplinary team teaching and flexible scheduling. The building features:

  • Simulation based technology labs
  • Integration with adjacent wooded site through nature trails
  • Community focused rooms including lecture room and flexible gymnasium
  • Locker bays adjacent to and specific to each house
  • Separated bus traffic from parental drop-off and pick-up
