Harper Woods Middle School

School District of the City of Harper Woods

Ideas of revealing layers and turning the corner heavily influenced the aesthetic image of the Harper Woods Middle and High School facility. These concepts are evident in the subtle color changes in the masonry as it literally turns the corner. Just as children reveal layers of their individuality, the envelope of the school reveals layers of color and material to reflect this evolving identity. The configuration strategically separates the middle and high school students with overlap at the core spaces. The mixture of traditional and contemporary materials also represents the blend of the community’s heritage with new ideas:

  • Collaborative learning environments
  • Versatile commons acts as a “town square” for the community
  • Thoughtful zoning of academics, arts and athletics with minimal corridors
