North Shore Academy is a grade 6-12 alternative school designed to provide a continuum of highly structure, individualized therapeutic programs to meet the educational and emotional needs of its students with special needs. Part of a special education cooperative, school board members, superintendents, and business managers across 18 school districts vetted the design options.
Students experience curriculum delivery in settings that lead to satisfying lives at home, school, and in the community. The building solution promotes a sense of belonging, independence, mastery, and generosity by organizing students with emotional and behavioral disabilities into grade-level groups that create neighborhoods. This yields a higher net area per student and allows support and retreat spaces during stressful situations. Each neighborhood area is welcoming and has easy supervision opportunities; they also include counseling areas as a therapeutic component to support student success and study rooms to provide space for one-on-one attention to students.
