Rice County Courthouse Historic Restoration

Rice County

The existing Rice County Courthouse was originally constructed in 1934 in the Art Deco style and was the seat of county government until construction of new county offices on an adjacent parcel. Various renovations and changes in use occurred since the original construction and these renovations did not maintain the original historic character of the interior spaces. In 2005 we developed a Historic Structure Report that documented many of the original design features and was the road map for the renovation project completed in 2007. The goal for the restoration and renovation project was to:

  • Maintain and restore the historic public spaces
  • Restore the historic exterior stone work and metal work
  • Improve space usage for courts
  • Upgrade and improve mechanical systems, sprinkler systems without compromising the historic character
  • Improve security

The careful planning and phasing allowed the Courts to function without interruption through the multi-phased renovation. While updating the courtrooms for accessibility, function and current technology, the design retained the historic elements unique to the Rice County Courthouse.
